Housing project for Paju Book City, 2002

A new architectural pattern of housing, a mat system,

is being proposed at the Paju Book City. It is a call to action to escape from living patterns which have created the segregation of cities into isolated islands, buildings deprived of life and of green tracts of land, the standard system so common to any place, that of high and dense situation in Korea. t has the relatively high density as in the system of the Smithsons and yet functions in an entirely different way in the problem of void and solid, closedness and openness, Iintimacy and anonymity,

low-rise and high-rise, and geometric form and formlessness; this system is studied as a possible solution to the problem of our forever multiplying apartment slabs and urban environment.  An idea of a community that falls into step with the city; a miniature city open to transformation is conceived and experimented with in the new context, Paju Book City.
