HOW TO BECOME US, 2011

"Korea is a patriarchal country. In such a society, Koreans have always had to deal with competition. It seems like Koreans obsess over checking the disparity that exist between other and themselves. In a country where the sense of "us" is strong, "us" stands for the strong sense of community, based on emotional solidarity, and also implies that hierarchy and order maintain the community. The community I am part of is called "us," while everyone else is "them." In How to Become Us, I removed parts from objects that weigh more than the 5.06kg average and attached these cut out parts to objects that weigh less than 5.06kg. Together, these objects formed a "community" of things of equal weight." Lee Wan
