Nakhee
Sung
b.
1971, born and based in Seoul, Korea.
Nakhee
Sung studied at the Rhode Island School
of Design, USA and the Royal College of
Art, the UK. Sung draws directly on walls
using spray paint, markers and sheets of
vinyl. By the fact that she directly draws
on the wall and the overall composition
has organic, cosmic and chaotic quality
in it, her murals are easy to be misunderstood
as improvisation. Even though they are made
by brisk unhesitant hand movements, they
are the results of a thorough understanding
of a given site. Her composition is contrived
in a mysterious way to extend the structure
of the space and enrich the layout of the
space. The walls no longer are bound by
the location, function, and size according
to the existing layout, but rather, they
are transferred into the experiences of
different dimension. This makes the paintings
of Sung compared to music that has abstract
expressiveness. This aspect will be seen
again in Sung¡¯s new site-specific wall
painting, which will organically spread
into the adjacent area of other artists,
as well as nearby column, ceiling and window.
Her vibrant, yet sober stride will leap
over the border of invisible territory allotted
for each individual artist.
